When you decide to do a Home Improvement Project, remember, the cheapest is not always the best. There might be a reason behind it. We have found when you buy a cheap home improvement product or service, it will usually cost you more money and added headaches down the road.
All of the pictures on this page are things we have come across that other contractors have done...
Most people know to ask for a copy of the contractor's current insurance certificates and licenses. Some customers will even check out the contractor with their local or state consumer protection officials. Thee are all great ideas and we recommend all of them. However, how do you know if the contractor is, well, good at his craft. We at Steel City Exteriors take great pride in our work, and we believe that shows through in the final result. Make sure when you talk with a contractor to ask to see pictures of their work. Ask for addresses where they have completed jobs similar to yours and go check them out. Even knock on the door, speak with the customer. We believe if you take these simple extra steps you can eliminate problems down the road.
We have included some examples of some work we have come across...
The J-Channel is supposed to be cut at a perfect 45 degree angle. This is simply a poor installation, however it is very common.

When we install fascia, we pre-drill and use color matched trim nails to secure the fascia. This contractor didn't even use nails!

This is a VERY incorrect way to install window flashing.

The transition between siding from the main house to the new addition is totally unacceptable.
Pay special attention to where the J-Channel transitions to another piece. It is NOT supposed to look like this.

When you run soffit on a porch. you don't run it long ways. Then you have those ugly seams, and the soffit will most likely start to sag and wave.

If you intall a downspout like this, the water will flow backwards. It will leak instantly.

No J-Channel at the bottom, different color siding, Vertical seam at the peak because the contractor couldn't match the siding runs. Not to mention the nails in the fascia.

Instead of replacing this broken piece of siding, this contractor thought it would be acceptable to face nail the siding. Along with many other reasons, face nailing the siding doesn't let the vinyl expand and contract. Causing it to buckle and pop out.
Don't let this happen to your home. When shopping for a contractor make sure you can see some of their past projects, if possible ask for customer references, and make sure you speak to some of those past customers. Make sure the expectations you have for the project match those of the contractor. You will find if you take these steps you will be happier with the outcome of your home improvement project.
